Gain practical knowledge of valve maintenance for the process and offshore industries. Building on Valve Technology I, this course covers cleaning and lubrication of valves, leak testing, replacement of valve stem packing, and adjustment and maintenance of gear operators. Most of the course is devoted to hands-on training in a valve laboratory. The course is based on the training curriculum defined in Offshore Norge Guideline 143 – Valve Technology (2026 revision).

Technical Information
A Valve Technology Handbook and exercise workbook will be provided during the course. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) and workwear are available.
The goal
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will have the knowledge and practical skills required to perform maintenance on valves, including:
- Performing functional testing and leak testing of valves and carrying out basic corrective actions when faults are identified
- Cleaning and lubricating valves, tightening stem seals, and adjusting travel stops
- Replacing valve packing, including under pressurized conditions
- Removing and reinstalling valves in piping systems and understanding the importance of correct installation practices
The target group
The course is intended for: Operations personnel, maintenance personnel, engineers, mechanical technicians, industrial pipefitters, process technicians, instrument and automation technicians, project personnel, supervisors and managers responsible for the selection, sales, handling, maintenance, and operation of valves within the oil and gas industry.
The topics covered
The course combines theoretical instruction with practical exercises covering the following topics:
- Inspection and visual examination of valves: operation and functionality, suitability for service, common failure mechanisms, weeping, sweating, and leakage
- Troubleshooting valve leakage
- Adjustment of travel stops, cleaning, and lubrication of various valve types
- Valve stem leakage
- Leak testing following maintenance activities
- Preventive maintenance: lubrication of valves, actuators, and gear operators, valve preservation and protection
Approximately half of the course duration is devoted to practical exercises carried out in small groups under instructor supervision in the valve laboratory.
Throughout the course, participants complete practical group assignments. The completed assignments serve as documentation of the competence achieved.

The course covers the competency requirements for personnel who will perform maintenance on valves in accordance with Offshore Norway Guideline 143, revised in summer 2026.
The training is adapted to the equipment used and complies with the requirements of the Norwegian Regulations concerning the Performance of Work, Sections 10-1 and 10-2, including associated guidance notes.
The course certificate is valid for five (5) years. A refresher course may be completed within six months after the five-year validity period has expired. Personnel who do not complete a refresher course within six months after the expiry date must attend the full course again.
