The goal

The course provides you with the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out the safety watch function (BES watch) during hot work and/or work in confined spaces. Upon completion, you will be able to perform the watch role in a professionally responsible manner in accordance with current laws and regulations and be listed as the designated watch on the work permit (AT/PTW).

The topics covered

Roles and responsibilities:

  • The three BES watch functions: fire watch, entry watch and coordinator
  • The permit-to-work system (PTW) and Safe Job Analysis (SJA)
  • Responsibilities, duties and limitations of the watch role

Confined spaces:

  • Definition, classification and risk assessment of confined spaces
  • Atmospheric hazards: oxygen deficiency, toxic and flammable gases
  • Isolation and lockout procedures (Lock Out / Tag Out / blinding)
  • Ventilation requirements and gas testing protocol

Hot work:

  • Risk assessment and preventive measures for welding, cutting and grinding
  • Fire-proofing the work area and requirements for fire watch
  • Inspection of firefighting equipment and post-work fire checks

Protective equipment and rescue:

  • Use of gas detector (sniffer), safety harness and breathing apparatus
  • Rescue equipment and techniques: non-entry rescue and assisted entry rescue
  • Emergency communication, alerting and evacuation

Documentation:

  • Completing and checking the work permit and atmospheric test document
  • Emergency plan, Toolbox Talk and log
  • Practical firefighting exercise

Prerequisites

A valid hot work certificate is mandatory and must be presented at the start of the course. This can be completed as e-learning or a classroom course with Kompetansebedriften in advance.
